Youth Services Library Assistant, part-time

EXPECTED HOURS

  • 15 hours/week
  • Monday mornings, Thursday evenings, Friday mornings + serve as part of the Saturday rotation

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports collection development by keeping department materials organized, shelf reading, helping with weeding, and reviewing materials for damage or replacement.
  • Participates in the selection of juvenile materials as assigned
  • Utilizes the library’s integrated library system software, especially the circulation module, to answer patron questions, update records, place holds for items and more.
  • Assists in development and implementation of programs and events for children, teens, and families, including offering one story time per week.
  • Creates dynamic, interesting, eye-catching book displays.
  • Decorates youth services spaces.

CIRCULATION AND PATRON SERVICES:

  • Staffs the Youth Circulation desk: checks out books and other materials, processes returned books, answers phone calls, and responds to patron inquiries.
  • Registers new patrons and issues library cards. 
  • Helps patrons locate books and navigate the library catalog. 
  • Provides readers’ advisory, including recommendations from within the collection.
  • Answers reference questions, promotes library events, and engages with children, teens, and parents in the library.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Performs such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Youth Services Department Head.

NECESSARY SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent customer service skills, especially when interacting with children and families
  • Knowledge of children's literature and ability to recommend age-appropriate books
  • Enthusiasm for promoting literacy and reading among young people 
  • Basic computer proficiency with library management systems
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing

Employees in this class follow policies and procedures in order to complete work that supports the library mission and goals and provide customer service.  This employee is required to meet standards for public service and accuracy goals. Work is performed independently with supervision, direction, and guidance from the Youth Services Supervisor who will review work for services provided to patrons, and professional library standards. Errors in judgment could have a negative impact on the public’s access to services and acceptance of programs and personnel.
